In 1913, a French company started construction on a dam to supply power for a smelter. A town, named after the CEO Adrien Badin, was built to provide homes for the workers of the company.
The company town was sold to the Melton Company of Pittsburgh in late 1915. By 1917, Badin had became a indefinite town with a school, hospital, a theater, and many commercial buildings. It even offered facilities and housing for black workers. By the 1920's, and the introduction of automobiles and better roads, a large number of workers left to live in bigger towns. The population dropped from around 5,000 in the 1920's to just 2,000 currently.
In 1983, the town was put on the National Register of Historic Places list. In 1990, Badin was incorporated.
