Bath was incorporated in 1705, and is North Carolina's oldest town.
In the 1690's, Protestant and French Huguenots (French Protestant) settled in what is modern day Bath, and by 1708 the town had almost 50 residents and 12 homes. Early in the town's history it was troubled with: yellow fever, drought, piracy, political struggle, and a war with the Tuscarora Indians. The town suffered multiple attacks but the Indians were ultimately defeated in 1715 by an alliance of North Carolina settlers and another group of Indians.
Blackbeard the pirate, infamous by the this time, temporarily settled in Bath in 1718. He was given a royal pardon in an attempt to reduce piracy in the region, but his continued piracy lead to his execution later the same year.
