Bear Grass is a very small town made up of around 70 people, and only consists of one stop light. The town, formerly known as the "Moonshine capital of the world", raised in popularity in times when it was against the law to indulge in alcohol. Although many of the residents work outside of the Bear Grass in the bigger cities; they still decide to live inside the town.
Bear Grass is home to the Deadwood Western Theme Park which includes: a steak restaurant, a put put course, a train ride, a saloon/dance hall, and even a roller coaster. And on the weekends some local bands show up to play at this family owned business.
Early colonists of the area now known as Bear grass were farmers; many of which produced shingles, tar, and turpentine from the local forests. In 1828, the Bear Grass Primitive Baptist Church was formed and a public school emerged in the 1860's. A general store opened in 1880, and in 1885, the post office opened. The town was incorporated in 1909.
