The town, named after Sir Henry Bessemer, was founded from land bought from Ormand family. Sir Henry Bessemer invented the Bessemer process for iron smelting, and made Bessemer City's previous smelting process outdated.

The earliest European settlement dates back to 1754, when King George II of England gave a land grant of 350 acres to James Ormand. The land he received was known then as Tyron County. James Ormand made the Ormand Mining Company; the company that helped the founding of Bessemer City.

The Ormand Furnace is the oldest of its kind in America. Some think that the company made cannon balls for the Revolutionary War, but no evidence of this has been found. Tyron County split up, and some of it became Gaston County in 1846.

Cotton and corn were the two main crops of the area in the 1840's. Whiskey was also profitable, and at the time Gaston had more whiskey distilleries than any of the counties in North Carolina.

The Ormand Family still owns the "Old Furnace", and the area is the location of the Ormand Family Reunion. The reunion is one of the oldest in America and has been held annually since 1897.

Bessemer City was incorporated in 1893.
