The area of modern day Broadway was settled in 1870, but wasn't officially incorporated until 1907. A broad level opening in the pine forest that covered the area at the time is why they called the town "Broadway".
The Broadway Normal School was founded in 1890, and boarding homes were managed for the most of the students. In 1901, Dr. Leon Watson started his practice in Broadway. In 1913, Dr. Watson and W.A. Crabtree founded a drug store. D.E. Shaw established the Bank of Broadway in 1909, and was the CEO until he died in 1956.
The town became known as "The Town of Candles" in the 1960's because of the lights covering the water tower, and the single white light every business lit in each of their windows.
