The Town of Calabash, named after gourds (plants) that grew there, is often referred to as the "Seafood Capital of the World" due to the famous "Calabash Style" the area is known for. The special flavor of this type of cooking became wildly popular and is now very common in most Carolina coastal towns.

The area of present day Calabash used to be known as "Pea Landing" in the 1800's, and was an important shipping center. In 1883, the "Village of Calabash" was founded when a post office was opened in Pea Landing.
