The Town of Carthage was incorporated in 1776. In 1806, the name was changed from Carthage to Fagansville to honor Richardson Fagin allowing the county seat to be relocated from his house to a piece of land he donated to the county. In 1818, the name was changed back to Carthage for unknown reasons.

Carthage belongs to Moore County in the south-central part of North Carolina. The County, named after Alfred Moore, is part of the Aberdeen-Pinehurst-Southern Pines, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area. Moore County has a population of 94,000 and the city Carthage, with a population of 2,000, is the county seat.

In 1785, the county was established from part of Cumberland County. Parts of Chatham and Moore County were merged to form Lee County in 1907.

Moore County is known for it's many golf resorts; mainly in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area. The county hosted the 1996 and 2001 Women's U.S. Opens, as well as the 1999 and 2005 Men's Opens. In 2007, the Women's Open came back to Southern Pines. Southern Pines hosted the Women's and the Men's Opens simultaneously in the same year, and was the first time ever in the U.S. Open history.

Moore County borders Chatham, Lee, Harnett, Cumberland, Hoke, Scotland, Richmond, Montgomery, and Randolph counties.
