In 1975, the Town of Caswell Beach was incorporated. Fort Caswell has accommodated the North Carolina Baptist Assembly since 1949. Fort Caswell became a National Historic District in 2013.

The town began a rigorous effort to restore and preserve the beach in the late 1990's, and Caswell received the Best Restored Beach award in 2002. In 2004, Caswell Beach procured the Oak Island Lighthouse after negotiations with the National Park Service.
