The area around Charlotte was first settled by the Catawba Native American tribe, and upon European settlement, most of the population would die due to smallpox.

In 1755, the area that would become Charlotte was first settled by European settler Thomas Spratt and his family.

The nickname of "The Queen City" is in reference to the Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz. Another nickname for Charlotte is "The Hornet's Nest" because the town was referred to as a hornet's nest of rebellion by British General Cornwallis during the Revolutionary War.

On May 20th the town celebrated "MecDec" which is in honor of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775 making it one of the first declarations in the wake of the signing of the entire nation's Declaration of Independence.

Charlotte is home to the earliest recorded documentation of gold being found which in turn set off the nation's first gold rush in the area.

The city was hit by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 which caused mass amounts of damage and took months of clean up after knocking power out for weeks.

The city was hit by an ice storm in 2002 which left over a million residents without power.

In September 2016 the town was enveloped in riots after police shootings.
