The town was first settled in roughly 1740 by settlers of European descent as Clinton Courthouse. The town was home to the Tobacco State League baseball team from 1946 to 1950.

Sampson County

Clinton belongs to Sampson County in the south-eastern part of North Carolina. The County was named after John Sampson and was established in 1784 with land taken from Duplin County. Immigrants from North Ireland settled in the area as early as the 1730's under protection of Henry McCulloch (a rich merchant from London).

Land grants of around 71,000 acres were given to McCullogh by the British Empire in 1745. One of the early settlers was John Sampson. Samson's suspected step-son, Richard Clinton, formed a militia in 1776 and defended Wilmington against the British. Richard represented Duplin County until the formation of Sampson County. Clinton assured the passage of the act to make the new county and named the new county "Sampson" for his stepfather John.
