In 1855, the county was formed from a part of Cumberland County. The area was primarily settled by Highland Scots. Throughout the American Revolution these settlers were loyalists to the British Crown. One of the last battles of the Civil War happened in Harnett County; the Battle of Averasborough.

Harnett County borders Johnston, Wake, Cumberland, Sampson, Moore, Chatham, and Lee counties.
