The town was named after J.B. Cornelius, a stockholder in a local cotton mill, with cotton being the foundation of the towns settlement.

 The county, a part of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, has a population of 1,034,070, while its largest city Charlotte, which is also the county seat, has a population of 810,000.

Mecklenburg County borders Gaston, Lincoln, York (SC), Lancaster (SC), Union, Iredell, Catawba and Cabarrus counties.
