The town was originally know as Davidson College from its founding until 1891.  

The town has seen developments toward mixed-use development, open space preservation, pedestrian orientation, connectivity, and affordable housing with the General Plan (1993), the Land Plan (1995), and the Planning Ordinance (2001) to support growth of the town.
