In 1777, Nash County was formed from part of Edgecombe County. The county was named after Francis Nash; an American Revolutionary War Brigadier General. He was wounded at the Battle of Germantown that year.

Parts of Edgecombe, Johnston, Wayne, and Nash counties were merged to form Wilson County in 1855.

Nash County borders Johnston, Franklin, Wake, Wilson, Halifax, Edgecombe, and Warren counties.
