The town was originally called Franklin Depot, and the name would later be changed to Franklinton when the town was incorporated in 1842. Former boxing champion Jack Johnson was killed in a car accident on a Franklin Highway in 1946.  

The town has a history of wildfires, with one fire destroying over 9,000 acres of land in 1963 and another fire that claimed 1,000 acres in 2008.
