The town was established as White Plains, with the name changing to Kings Mountain upon its incorporation in 1874. The town was named in honor of the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War.

Most of the hostilities ended when the controversy of land boundaries between North and South Carolina resolved, and the Catawba tribe moved to a reservation in South Carolina.
