The town was settled in 1730 by John Hinton, who was sent with a group of settlers by the King of the England to occupy the land.  

Knightdale was incorporated in 1927, and in 1940, homes and businesses were destroyed when a fire broke out in town's center, which was extinguished by Raleigh firefighters. 

Actor Frankie Muniz was raised in the area after his family moved to the area from New Jersey prior to his discovery at a talent show in Raleigh.

The area that now makes up modern day Wake County used to be part of the Tuscarora nation. In 1771, the Wake County was formed from parts of Johnston, Orange, and Cumberland counties. The first courthouse in the county was built in modern day Bloomsbury, but then was a village known as Wake Courthouse. The first elections were in held in 1771, and a militia was formed.

Wake County borders Granville, Franklin, Johnston, Nash, Harnett, Chatham, and Durham counties.
