Lansing belongs to Ashe County in the eastern part of North Carolina. Ashe County has a population of 27,000 and its largest city Jefferson, with a population of 1,600, is the county seat.

Historical evidence suggests that the county was settled by Native Americans including: the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Creek tribes. The area was settled by the first Europeans in 1771, but was surveyed in 1749 by Peter Jefferson to define the state line between North Carolina and Virginia.

In 1780, a skirmish was fought in Ashe County during the Revolutionary War. The battle was known as the "Battle of the Big Glades". Captain Robert Love led the Americans to victory against 150 British Loyalists.

Ashe County became an official county of North Carolina in 1799, and at that time it consisted of 977 square miles. The county was named after Samuel Ashe who was a superior court judge, Revolutionary patriot, and Governor of North Carolina (1795-1798).

Ashe County borders Watauga, Wilkes, Alleghany, Grayson (Virginia), and Johnson (Tennessee) counties.
