The area which is now Stanly County used to home to tribes of Mound Builders and hunter-gatherers whose relics have dated to 10,000 years ago.

In the mid 1800's a large amount of European settlers arrived; some seeking religious freedom. The County was formed from part of Montgomery County in 1841.

Stanly County borders Rowan, Montgomery, Davidson, Anson, Union, and Cabarrus Counties.

Cabarrus County

Locust belongs to Cabarrus County in the south-central part of North Carolina. The County, named after Stephen Cabarrus, is part of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cabarrus County has a population of 192,000 and its largest city Concord, with a population of 86,000, is the county seat.

In 1792, the county was formed from a part of Mecklenburg County. In the 1750's the area of modern day Cabarrus County was settled by Scots-Irish and German immigrants. The two groups came together and chose Concord to be the location of the county seat in 1796. Concord was officially incorporated in 1806.

One of the first major gold finds in America was in located in southeastern Cabarrus County in 1799; the piece of gold weighed 17 pounds. This find started the gold mining of the county.

Cabarrus County borders Rowan, Union, Stanly, Mecklenburg, and Iredell counties.

Cabarrus County is made up of 364 square miles. 362 of which is land with the remaining 2 as water.
