The town was settled at some point during the 1700s, and was later incorporated in 1874 as Shoe Heel.  

The name later changed to Tilden, in honor of Samuel J. Tilden. The town would assume its current name of Maxton in 1887.

In 1958, a confrontation between the Lumbee tribe of Native Americans and KKK members resulted in the Klan being ran out of the area and never again holding a rally in Robeson County; an event that is now known as the Battle of Hayes Pond.
