Mayodan's history can be traced back to the opening of the Washington Mills-Mayodan Plant, which was in operation from 1896 to 1999. The town's early growth and livelihood was centered around the mill. 

The town's name is a combination of the Mayo River and Dan River's names. The town is notable for being the only town in the world to have the name of Mayodan.
