The County, named after Stephen Cabarrus, is part of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1792, the county was formed from a part of Mecklenburg County. In the 1750's the area of modern day Cabarrus County was settled by Scots-Irish and German immigrants. The two groups came together and chose Concord to be the location of the county seat in 1796. Concord was officially incorporated in 1806.

One of the first major gold finds in America was in located in southeastern Cabarrus County in 1799; the piece of gold weighed 17 pounds. This find started the gold mining of the county.

Cabarrus County borders Rowan, Union, Stanly, Mecklenburg, and Iredell counties.
