Buncombe County

Montreat belongs to Buncombe County in the western part of North Carolina. The County, named after Edward Buncombe, is part of the Asheville, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Buncombe County has a population of 48,000 and its largest city Asheville, with a population of 83,000, is the county seat.

The county formed from parts of Burke and Rutherford County in 1791. The early settlers were mostly Baptists, and six churches formed the French Broad Association of Baptist churches in 1807. In 1808, the western part of the county was taken to form Haywood County. Some of Burke and Buncombe County were chosen to make Yancey County in 1833.

In 1838, the southern part of Buncombe became Henderson County. In 1851, parts of Buncombe and Yancey County were used to make Madison County. Lastly, the Broad River township of McDowell County was given to Buncombe County.

Buncombe County borders Madison, Yancey, McDowell, Rutherford, Henderson, Haywood and Transylvania counties.

Buncombe County is made up of 660 square miles. 657 of which is land with the remaining 3 as water.
