Morganton was discovered by a Spanish expedition in the mid-16th century. The town was officially founded in 1777.  

An explosion happened at the Synthron Inc. chemical plant in 2006. 14 workers were injured by the explosion, with one worker later dying.

Burke County formed from part of Rowan County in 1777, and was settle primarily by German and Scots-Irish immigrants during the 18th century. Some of the citizens of Burke County fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, and were victorious over the British. From 1791 to 1861, parts of Burke County were taken to form other counties including: Buncombe, Yancey, Caldwell, McDowell, and Mitchell counties.

Burke County borders Caldwell, Avery, Lincoln, Catawba, Cleveland, McDowell, and Rutherford counties.

Burke County is made up of 515 square miles. 507 of which is land with the remaining 8 as water.
