Ocean Isle Beach was founded in the late 1940s. The town was originally known as Hale Beach, and the town would later assume its current name of Ocean Isle Beach in 1949.  

Many houses were destroyed when Hurricane Hazel hit the area in 1954. Ocean Isle Beach would receive incorporation in 1959.
