Polkton belongs to Anson County in the south-central part of North Carolina. Anson County has a population of 27,000 and its largest city Wadesboro, with a population of 5,800, is the county seat.

In 1750, the county was formed from part of Bladen County. Anson County was named after George Anson (Baron Anson). He was a British admiral who sailed all the way around the world from 1740 to 1744, and was the First Lord of the Admiralty.

Reductions of the size of the county began in 1753 with the northern part taken to form Rowan County. The western part of Anson County was used to make Mecklenburg County in 1762. In 1779, another piece of the northern part of Anson county was used to form Montgomery County. The last reduction of the county was in 1842, and it was the western part of Anson County that was used to establish Union County.

Anson County borders Stanly, Richmond, Marlboro (South Carolina), Chesterfield (South Carolina), and Union counties.
