Land grants of around 71,000 acres were given to McCullogh by the British Empire in 1745. One of the early settlers was John Sampson. Samson's suspected step-son, Richard Clinton, formed a militia in 1776 and defended Wilmington against the British.
Richard represented Duplin County until the formation of Sampson County. Clinton assured the passage of the act to make the new county and named the new county "Sampson" for his stepfather John.
