The area which is now Stanly County used to home to tribes of Mound Builders and hunter-gatherers whose relics have dated to 10,000 years ago. In the mid 1800's a large amount of European settlers arrived; some seeking religious freedom. The County was formed from part of Montgomery County in 1841.

Stanly County borders Rowan, Montgomery, Davidson, Anson, Union, and Cabarrus Counties.
