Summerfield belongs to Guilford County in the northern part of North Carolina. The county is named after Francis North, who's title was the Earl of Guilford. It was home of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the American Revolution.

It was also a stop for the Underground Railroad, and was home to the Greensboro Massacre in 1979. The county is part of the Greensboro-High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area. Guilford County has a population of 517,600, and its largest city Greensboro, which has a population of 285,300, is the county seat.

Guilford County borders Forsyth, Alamance, Rockingham, Davidson and Randolph counties.
