The county, named after Richard Edgecombe, is part of the Rocky Mount, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1741, Edgecombe County was formed from a part of Bertie County. Edgecombe County has a population of 57,000 and the town Tarboro, with a population of 11,000, is the county seat.

Edgecombe County borders Martin, Halifax, Pitt, Nash, and Wilson counties.

In 1777, Nash County was formed from part of Edgecombe County. The county was named after Francis Nash; an American Revolutionary War Brigadier General. He was wounded at the the Battle of Germantown that year.

Parts of Edgecombe, Johnston, Wayne, and Nash counties were merged to form Wilson County in 1855.

Nash County borders Johnston, Franklin, Wake, Wilson, Halifax, Edgecombe, and Warren counties.
