The town was founded upon the establishment of a post office in the early 1880s. The town was hit by two hurricanes in 1899, causing widespread damage across the area.  

The town was hit the multiple hurricanes in 1954, causing damage and marking the first time a Category 4 hurricane ever made landfall in North Carolina history.
